An Overview of Nonreferential IT and THERE
This paper was written for my E515 Syntax course. This topic is based on a chapter from our course book, The Grammar Book: An ESL/EFL Teacher’s
Course by Celce-Murcia and Larsen-Freeman (1999). It incorporates supplementary research to examine nonreferential it and there critically, specifically asking what knowledge a TESL/TEFL teacher should have on the topic to teach it. This paper increased my own knowledge on the syntax of nonreferential it and there, and gave me ideas about how I can better help my students with this concept, such as why it may be difficult for them and what language to use to explain in. This paper shows how I am able to conduct research about language as a system and apply it to anticipate learner difficulties, as well as provides connections between English language systems and instructional practice.
