Teaching Practicum: The Second Lesson
These materials come from E684 TESL/TEFL Teaching Practicum, which followed the SIOP model lesson plan format. Specifically, great attention is paid to all lesson aspects from start to finish, including planning using content and language objectives, lesson delivery, assessment, and self-reflection. The students were adult ELLs whose L1s were Vietnamese, Spanish, and French. This practicum lesson demonstrates my ability to provide integrative, relevant, and meaningful content-based instruction. The activities are based on student interests and text, with ample opportunity for personal experience to enhance students' comprehension and communication.
My second lesson was a result of direct student feedback that I gathered in between my lessons 1 and 2. Students expressed interest in learning more about the U.S. educational system, which became the theme of Lesson 2. Most of the students were teachers in their home countries, so this theme allowed me to use their prior knowledge about educational systems to help provide comprehensible input for new content and language terms. This lesson plan includes some adaptations to proficiency level because there was a broad range of students' English language proficiency levels. I also tried to integrate the four language skills in a way that increased comprehensible input. For example, before asking students to read an informative article about the American educational system, I first gave them direct instruction on vocabulary terms they would need to know to understand the article. Then, before asking students to compare and contrast home country and U.S. educational systems in a oral discussion, they were able to prepare using the article. This lesson shows that I understand that language is developed most effectively through meaningful activities and instruction.
After the lesson, peers and instructors gave me constructive criticism based on their observations in order to improve for Lesson 2. In addition to the outside evaluation, I also wrote a self-reflection on my own teaching.
