CSU Writing Center Resources: the Analysis vs. Summary Handout
I developed this resource handout as a result of working as a CSU Writing Center Consultant (2012-present) and a T.A. in CO150 International (Spring 2013). I noticed common feedback from teachers on Writing Center clients' papers were "This paper needs more analysis". Many times this occurred on the papers of international students, though native English speakers (NS) also received this feedback. After conferring with other consultants, administration, and working with dozens of these students in 30 minute consulting sessions, I determined that the problem was a lack of understanding of analysis in regards to college composition. I also noted that the Writing Center did not have any resources to address this need, so I decided to create one for professional development for the Writing Center.
The Writing Center serves not just CSU students, but alumni and community members. This handout shows that I advocate for appropriate resources for students by providing equitable access to resources for ELLs and NS. It also shows that I collaborate with administrators, professional colleagues, and students to bring more awareness of resources that can be of assistance in the community.
This handout is scheduled to be available on the CSU Writing Center's website Spring 2014, where anyone who has online access with be able to use it.
