Teaching Practicum: The First Lesson
These materials come from the E684 TESL/TEFL Teaching Practicum, which followed the SIOP model lesson plan format. Specifically, great attention is paid to all lesson aspects from start to finish, including planning using content and language objectives, lesson delivery, assessment, and self-reflection. The students were adult ELLs whose L1s were Vietnamese, Spanish, and French. This practicum lesson demonstrates my ability to provide integrative, meaningful, content-based instruction with a wide variety of activities for students' language development.
I taught my Lesson 1 the first day of class, so the "Getting to Know You" theme is very appropriate for the context. This lesson plan includes many adaptations to proficiency level, because at the time of planning I did not know anything about my students. Because of the unknowns, I purposefully added many opportunities for students to share their personal experience as a strategy for comprehensible input, as well as a technique for fostering a positive classroom environment. Additionally, I tried to make an integrative lesson plan which encouraged listening, speaking, reading, and writing, so that I could begin to formatively observe their comfort level and general proficiency with each skill.
After the lesson, peers and instructors gave me constructive criticism based on their observations in order to improve for Lesson 2. In addition to the outside evaluation, I also wrote a self-reflection on my own teaching.
Below is my lesson plan with teaching materials.
