Listening/Speaking 100 Oral Interview Rubric
This criterion-referenced assessment was created for the Listening/Speaking 100 level course that I am currently teaching. The assessment was an adaptation of the general rubric, done by myself and my Internship supervisor. The general rubric did not use student-friendly language and did not accurately reflect low-intermediate oral proficiency criterion. Therefore, we needed an updated version for our class that better reflected the course objectives and our students' proficiency level. We wanted to use student-friendly language so that students understand how the L/S 100 oral interviews are graded, and can also use it formatively to understand how to improve.

5.4 Uses effective vocabulary for clear meaning of ideas
Below is the revised assessment rubric. The rationale for revising the rubric is as follows:

Below is the revised assessment rubric. The rationale for revising the rubric is as follows:
- The maximum score for each criterion box is 5 points, for a total of 20 points possible. This is in accordance with the original rubric.
- Each box has 2 designated criteria, making it possible for students to partially fulfill the given criteria in each box. When this happens, half points are given. (Ex: All verbs are used correctly (5) but Word order is generally correct (4), therefore Language=4.5)
- The language used for the labeling (Advanced, Satisfactory, Needs Improvement, Does Not Meet Expectations) reflects the language used at INTO. In this program, the cut score is 80%. The class is pass/fail, and uses the terms Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory.
- Adding a brief explanation under each heading, such as Content and Vocabulary (Specific ideas and vocabulary from the text) helps students to clearly understand the meaning of each category.
- Language was changed to be more student-friendly. For example, "negotiate for meaning" in Fluency and Communicative Ability was changed to "follow-up questions from the instructor".
