Adapting Resource Handbooks for L2 Learners' University Orientation
I am thrilled to have attended and presented at the TESOL 2014 Convention in March. The presentation originated from the ELL Orientation Handbook Project. Our poster presentation took place on Thursday, March 27th at 12:30. I also received a TESOL Professional Development Scholarship, which helped provide funding to cover some of the conference expenses. As a representative of CSU at the conference, I promoted the importance of equitable access to community resources for ELLs with a tangible example of how to do so. I enjoyed exchanging ideas and learning new information at TESOL 2014.
Below is the abstract that was included in the TESOL 2014 program, as well as supplementary materials and the poster that used during our presentation.
Session Summary: Presenters discuss the process of creating a comprehensible resource handbook for incoming international students. This consists of revising existing university orientation materials and compiling community resource information to adapt to the language proficiency and experience of students on campus.
Session Abstract: Existing resource handbooks for international ELL students are often written in language that is beyond the comprehension of newly arrived students with a low level of English proficiency. A resource handbook was created by adapting existing university orientation material to a K1 word list level. By adding captions, pictures, diagrams, maps and definitions as well as collaborating with faculty, students and community leaders, a handbook was created that serves as an orientation manual and a comprehensive guide to daily life in our community. Topics include medical care, safety, recreation and fitness, campus dining, international student services, academic services, public transportation, biking and driving. The handbook will be incorporated in new student university orientation programs in the fall. The presenters discuss the process of revising orientation materials and compiling community resource information to adapt to the language proficiency and experience of incoming international students.
