Listening/Speaking 100 Self-Assessment
This formative assessment was created for the Listening/Speaking 100 level course that I am currently teaching. The assessment is a self-reflection, which asks students to look back at their Midterm Presentations and forward to their upcoming Final Presentations. The purpose of the assessment, given at the start of the Final Presentation assignment, was to guide students into learning from their Midterm Presentations in order to improve on their Finals. I chose to make this self-reflection a "trading questions" activity, which is a partner activity. In trading questions, each student in the class receives a different question about the same topic, which is the rationale for asking 16 questions. Then, students find a partner to ask and respond to their questions. At the end of the conversation, partners trade questions with each other and find someone else to ask their new question. This continues until everyone in the class has asked and answered all 16 questions. Trading questions is an ideal activity for L/S 100 because it gives everyone a chance to participate and requires listening, speaking, and reading. This trading questions Midterm Presentation self-assessment also aligns well with multiple curricular objectives.
