Vocabulary Learning: Using CALL for an ESP Business Course
This was a group project for the E634 Lexicon course, and was inspired by INTO CSU's request for resources to bridge a vocabulary knowledge gap between their English for Specific Purposes (ESP) business Pathways program and the general education Business 100 (BUS100) course. International students moving from ESP to general education are struggling to keep up with course material due to vocabulary that is not covered in ESP because it is too advanced, yet not covered in BUS100 because it is assumed knowledge for native speakers of English. In order to help bridge this gap, our group created a corpus of business course books from which we generated a list of target vocabulary words, and finally created interactive vocabulary learning modules to foster independent learning.
This project demonstrates my understanding that Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is a valuable technological resource for both teachers and students. It is a strong example of how I have collaborated with others (peers, BUS100 professors, ESP staff, and INTO administrators) to develop materials that integrate ESL and content areas. It also shows that I can use technological resources to adapt materials to meet ELLs' language and content learning needs.
