The TESOL/NCATE Standards
The standard requirements for professional ESL teachers are mandated by the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) organization. These standards are nationally recognized and used by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) for teacher education programs. The standards were revised in 2009.
The 2009 TESOL/NCATE standards contain five domains: Language, Culture, Instruction, Assessment and Professionalism. Within each domain, subcategories specify requirements for qualified ESL teachers. For each domain and subcategory, I have selected a variety of examples for this portfolio. These examples include research papers, research projects, examples of lesson plans and activities, and reflections on events. Overall, I show my knowledge and expertise as an ESL teacher by proving evidence that I meet the standards in each domain.
